Milan Design Week – the most important design fair of 2019 is about to start next week. The number of exhibitions around Milan can be overwhelming – there are already many guides offering itineraries in various parts of the city. Here I would like to share 5 new products to be shown during Milan Design Week, in different styles for diverse tastes. Minimalists, lovers of Nordic design and modern lighting, maximalists and fashionistas – scroll down to discover my picks.
Exto – Iride mirrors
The Italian brand has based its DNA on vintage materials and innovative techniques. During the design week they will debut a limited edition of backlit glass mirrors in 4 colour versions, designed by Vito Nesta. The mirrors are inspired by the irides of eyes and, like them, each mirror has its own unique colour nuances. All frames are made from layers of discontinued Desag glass and the printed glasses used for bathroom doors in the 1980s.

Carbon Light – modern minimalism at Euroluce 2019
If you’re looking for modern lighting ideas fit for a minimal apartment/office space, you should visit the Tokio stand at this year’s Euroluce. The Slovenian brand is the brainchild of Asobi, an award-winning creative consultancy founded by Gorazd Malacic. For Euroluce 2019 the company will present Carbon Light, a modular lighting system made of ultra light carbon fibre and adaptable LED spots. Its clean lines and modern form will add a unique, sculptural touch to any space, including meeting rooms and other corporate environments.

Marimekko – the spring/summer Onni collection at Bagalier Milano Tortona
I’ve recently written about Marimekko in my article about Finnish design that you can read here. The Finnish company is world-famous for its creative, often vibrant prints applied to a variety of textiles and home accessories. For spring/summer 2019 Marimekko introduces a joyful Onni print, a word that means ‘happiness’ in Finnish. It’s the latest creation by Fujiwo Ishimoto, a Japanese artist who over the years has created more than 400 Marimekko prints, both abstract and figurative, all of them inspired by the beauty of nature.

Illulian – Cocarde rug by Cristina Celestino
This year the luxury Italian rug brand celebrates its 60 anniversary with some exciting novelties such as Cocarde by Cristina Celestino. The Milanese designer, known for her retro modern aesthetic, has created a complex pattern inspired by the cockade, a knot of ribbons. The swirling cockades resemble rose petals in movement, their geometric outlines softened by a delicate, pastel colour palette. The rug is hand-knotted in Himalayan wool and pure silk.

Versace Home Collection 2019 – Pop Medusa
The latest addition to the Versace Home Collection channels the bold and eclectic vibe of the iconic fashion brand, while referencing its mythological symbols. Chairs from the Pop Medusa line are made from a weather resistant polyethylene, which makes them suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces. They will be part of a special installation held at Palazzo Versace, created in collaboration with interior designer Sasha Bickoff and artist Andy Dixon that will delight the brand’s fans with references to the classic 1990s Versace imagery.
